A trip to Lam Thuong wouldn't be complete without discovering the traditional cuisine of the Tay community. In stilt houses or local homestays, travellers can sample specialities made with ingredients sourced directly from the region.

Dishes to try include xoi tim (purple sticky rice), ca bong (fermented fish), grilled free-range chicken, and fresh bamboo shoots. Most ingredients used in local cooking come from family farms and gardens, giving the meals a simple, authentic flavour deeply tied to the land of Lam Thuong.

Beyond tasting the food, visitors can also join in preparing meals: helping catch fish or ducks from the ponds, preparing ingredients alongside locals, or watching food cooked over a wood fire. These shared moments, filled with conversation around the hearth and a friendly meal, offer a genuine glimpse into the daily life of Tay families.

4.5. Cool off at Nam Chan waterfall

At the heart of the Lam Thuong valley, Nam Chan waterfall is an ideal stop for travellers wanting to fully enjoy nature. To reach it, follow a hiking trail alongside the Khuoi Luong stream, through a still-wild and peaceful setting.

After this walk along the water, visitors can relax at the foot of the waterfall, swim in its natural pools of cool, crystal-clear water, or simply enjoy the calm of the surrounding mountains. Some travellers also choose to unwind by the water's edge, including trying a natural fish-nibbling foot massage.

4.6. Explore the natural caves of Lam Thuong

For travellers looking for a more adventurous experience, the caves of Lam Thuong reveal another side of this still-unspoiled valley. Natural sites such as Tham Duong, Na Ken and Tat En caves can be reached via hiking trails that cross the mountainous scenery of Yen Bai.

Still little known to visitors, these caves retain a wild and authentic character. The route can be demanding at times, requiring some effort, but it's rewarded with beautiful surrounding landscapes and a fascinating underground world, where stalactites and rock formations create a unique atmosphere.

Exploring these caves is a chance to step off the usual routes and discover a wilder side of Lam Thuong, combining adventure, nature and karst scenery.

5. Where to stay in Lam Thuong

To fully enjoy the valley's peaceful atmosphere, it's highly recommended to spend at least one night in Lam Thuong. Most accommodation options are homestays run by local families, offering a friendly, authentic experience at the heart of nature.

Staying in a traditional stilt house or a wooden bungalow, travellers can wake up facing rice fields and mountains, share meals with their hosts, and discover the daily life of the Tay community. 6. How to get to Lam Thuong

Located in Luc Yen district, Lao Cai province (formerly Yen Bai), Lam Thuong remains a valley still untouched by mass tourism. From Hanoi, allow around 5 to 6 hours of travel to reach this peaceful destination in northern Vietnam.

By private car

The most comfortable way to reach Lam Thuong is by private car from Hanoi. The journey allows you to gradually take in the landscapes of northern Vietnam, passing through mountain roads and rural villages. This option is especially recommended for foreign travellers or those wishing to combine Lam Thuong with other destinations in Yen Bai, while enjoying a more flexible trip.

By bus and local transport

For independent travellers, it's also possible to take a bus from Hanoi to Yen Bai or Luc Yen (around 150,000–200,000 VND one way), then continue to Lam Thuong by local taxi or a transfer arranged by the homestay. However, as public transport to remote villages remains limited, it's best to plan your route carefully in advance.

Note:

The final stretch to Lam Thuong runs along smaller mountain roads, so it's best to travel during daylight and allow plenty of time to enjoy the journey.

For a first trip into rural Vietnam, arranging a private transfer directly with your travel agency or homestay is often the simplest and most pleasant solution.

7. How long should you spend in Lam Thuong?

We recommend allowing 2 days and 1 night to discover the essentials of Lam Thuong. This gives enough time to visit the Tay villages, enjoy the valley's landscapes, hike to Nam Chan waterfall or explore the natural caves, while still taking time to share a meal and a night with a local family. If you'd like to explore the surrounding area at a more relaxed pace or combine several outdoor activities, a 3-day, 2-night stay will offer an even more immersive experience.
