1. Best time to visit North Vietnam

The weather in North Vietnam varies from Delta to the Mountain. In general, the good time to visit North Vietnam is from September to November and from March to May when the weather is mild and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 28°C. During these months, you can expect clear skies and a more comfortable climate for outdoor activities, compared to heat in the summer.

In contrast, the winter months from December to February can be very cold and damp, particularly in the mountainous regions, with temperatures dropping to below 10°C. The summer months from June to August are hot and humid, with frequent rain showers and the possibility of typhoons.

If you want to avoid the crowds and enjoy the beauty of the autumn foliage, September to November is an excellent time to visit. On the other hand, if you plan to trek in the mountains or visit the hill tribes, March to May offers the best weather conditions.

Hi, I’m going to be in Vietnam 18 days and we want to visit the northern part only. We are spending a couple days in Hanoi, but we then want to visit Pu Luong, Moc Chau, Ha giang loop, Hoang Su Phi, Ban Gioc waterfalls and Lan Ha bay, but we aren’t sure in which order in makes sense with transportation. Maybe you can help us make sense of our itinerary. Thank you

We would like a custom trip to the best sites in northern Vietnam. We would like to see the country side at its best such as when the rice patties are close to harvesting. We were thinking of May June in 2024. We do not have a time constraint, so can take as much time as needed And can afford to travel independently if necessary and stay in good locations. We would also want time in Hanoi and then how long bay. Please give us your suggestions on the best tour we could take and when is the best time to take it. Bill Fletcher

Hi Anja, to best enjoy the scenery without hassle you can spend at least 1 day in Hanoi, 2 days in Halong Bay, 2 days in Cao Bang (where Ban Gioc waterfall is located). It takes you around 6.5 - 7 hours to drive from Hanoi to Ban Gioc waterfall so recommend you to combine with some visits to ethnic villages and attractions on the route to have an enjoyable excursion. Best regards,
