1. Van Long - The General Introduction
Van Long is the largest wetland area in Northern Vietnam, just 80km from the bustling capital of Hanoi. Nestled in the heart of Gia Vien district, Ninh Binh province, this pristine wetland offers a vast habitat for many local birs, herons, storks as well as the winter home for many migratory birds. Renowned for its untouched beauty and incredibly rich and diverse ecosystem, Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve attracts many nature lovers.
Spanning an impressive 3,500 hectares, this natural haven has two main ecosystems: wetlands and limestone forests. It's a sanctuary where lush greenery meets dramatic limestone formations, creating a landscape of exceptional beauty. Since 2010, Van Long has been recognized as a key national tourist destination, boasting two records from the Vietnam Book of Records: "The place with the largest number of Delacour's langurs" and "The place with the largest natural painting".
Since its designation as a nature reserve in 1999, Van Long has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to preserving its precious ecosystem.
This remarkable sanctuary teems with more than 500 species of flora and fauna, including some rare and dangered animals like the critically endangered Delacour's langur. The forest is also home to the king cobra, the Eastern rat snake, and other lizards.
Beyond its vital role in conservation, Van Long harbors diverse ecosystems such as rice paddies, grasslands, and upland fields, providing a habitat for thousands of aquatic plants and animals. The idyllic and poetic atmosphere of this natural wonderland invites you to savor every moment, immersing yourself in its tranquility and splendor.

2. Must-do Things in Van Long Lagoon
When you explore Van Long, Vietnam, you'll be amazed by the diversity and beauty of its natural environment, alongside cultural experiences that cannot be compared to the rest of Ninh Binh. Here are some highlights that will make your Van Long trip truly special:
2.1. Van Long boat trip
Taking an eco-friendly boat trip is an absolute must-do to fully appreciate the ecological diversity of the Van Long Nature Reserve. Because the water is shallow, only these small bamboo boats can allow you to glide effortlessly through the peaceful waterways while soaking in the mesmerising scenery. The friendly, smiling local rowers are happy to introduce you about the area.
You might find this experience quite similar to Tam Coc or Trang An. However, Van Long Lagoon exudes a sense of peace and tranquility, a contrast to the hustle and bustle of Ninh Binh's other crowded tourist spots. There's no hassle from vendors trying to sell you food and drinks or photographers wanting to take your picture.

As the small boat takes you around the ecosystem, you can admire the limestone mountains rising dramatically from the calm water. Don't forget to look out for the delicate aquatic plants dancing gracefully beneath the surface. During your waterborne adventure, you'll visit Fish Cave (Hang Cá), one of the largest caves in the Van Long Nature Reserve, measuring 250m long, 8m high, and 10m wide.
If luck is on your side, you might even spot the rare Delacour's langurs and flocks of white storks soaring through the sky. Sometimes the langurs come down to the foot of the mountain to drink water, while at other times they bask in the sun high on the peak of Hoang Quyen Mountain. The local fishermen say that they come out every day, but they change their feeding spot daily.
Delacour's langur, found nowhere else on Earth, is endemic to Vietnam and listed in the Red Book.
2.2. Cycling along the embankment
Gia Vien district, where the Van Long Nature Reserve is located, is an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic experience of rural life in the Red River Delta. There's no reason to refuse an invitation to embark on an exciting cycling adventure. Pedal through peaceful villages, along the dykes, and across immense rice paddies to get closer to the daily life of the locals.

While riding on the embankment, you'll be treated to impressive limestone mountains like Mount Meo Cao (with giant mountain scratches resembling cat scratches), water buffalo leisurely grazing, and ducks playfully swimming in the lagoon. It all adds to the rustic charm of Van Long.
2.3. Visit to the ancient Thung La Temple
Located near the Van Long boat dock is Thung La Temple. Built during the reign of King Dinh in the 11th century, this historic temple is nestled amidst lush vegetation. As the temple lies within a sacred mountain area, locals traditionally visit to pray for protection and safe return before they enter the forest.
Today, people also come to witness the "Len Dong" ceremony (a votive dance) - the most popular Mother Goddess worship ritual of Vietnamese people. Here, you can meet Mr. Tuong, the temple guardian, and enjoy an authentic conversation, or join Mr. Tuyen, a local artist, for a performance of traditional folk instruments.
Thung La Temple can be the destination on your cycling journey. From here, you can cycle back or conveniently hire a vehicle to transport you and your bike back to your starting point.
2.4. Making an embroidery
Embroidery has existed in Van Long for centuries, but it's only in recent years that the craft has been revitalised thanks to the skilled hands of local women. Visitors can now actively participate in creating embroidered products under the clear guidance of local artisans. In Lang Van village, meet Mrs. Lam, an embroiderer with 45 years of experience, to learn hand-embroidery techniques and discover the intricate characteristic patterns of this traditional art.
Beyond observing finished products, this enriching experience allows you to discover a new skill and leave with a unique, hand-made souvenir by yourself. Moreover, by participating in embroidery classes, visitors contribute to preserving the craft in Ninh Binh and supporting local artisans.
The embroidery workshop brought fun and memorable experiences to IZITOUR's customers.
2.5. Visit to the Lang Van Church
Located right next to the tranquil Van Long Nature Reserve, Lang Van Church is built in the Gothic architectural style, drawing inspiration from famous cathedrals in Europe. Its bell tower soars to a height of 110 meters, making it visible from anywhere in the village. Upon completion, Lang Van Church will have a capacity of around 5,000 people. For this reason, many parishioners believe that Lang Van will be the largest church in Southeast Asia.
3. Best time to visit Van Long
Van Long Lagoon boasts breathtaking beauty year-round, but choosing the ideal time for your visit depends on what you seek from this remarkable wetland. Take a look to the seasons and the best times to explore this natural wonder.
Winter (November to April): The season of Northern bird migration
From November to April, Van Long Lagoon welcomes a multitude of migratory birds from the north seeking nesting grounds. This is an ideal time to explore the lagoon, as it is also the dry season, providing perfect conditions to experience the area's splendid flora and fauna without the worry of heavy rainfall. You'll be able to observe various bird species in their natural habitat, including storks, herons, and many others.
Summer (May to June): Lotus blooming season
If you love the sight of blooming lotuses, plan your visit to Van Long Lagoon during the summer, specifically from late May to early June. This period marks the lotus season, where the lagoon transforms into a vibrant spectacle of brilliant pink blossoms. The air fills with the sweet fragrance of lotus flowers, creating an enchanting atmosphere. It is the time that the limestone mountain acts as the perfect backdrop to these stunning flowers. Visitors have a chance to capture magnificent photographs.
Monsoon (July to September): Rainy season
While Van Long can be visited year-round, it's not advisable to plan your trip during the rainy season, from July to September. The overcast weather and frequent downpours might limit your ability to fully enjoy the lagoon's beauty, and high water levels may make it impossible to explore some caves.
Best time of day to visit Van Long: Afternoon (3:30 PM - 4:30 PM)
The optimal time of day to visit the Van Long ecosystem is either early morning or late afternoon. Early mornings offer a refreshingly cool atmosphere with a sense of serenity and closeness to nature. In the afternoon, you'll witness the sunset and dusk over the mountain scenery, a truly awe-inspiring sight. These are also the two times of day when you can witness flocks of birds soaring through the sky as they forage for food and return to their nests. With luck, you might even spot Delacour's langurs on the surrounding mountains.
