A Travel Guide to Vietnam in December

In December, you normally have long vacations , why don't you spend these days with friends and relatives on adventures around the world? In this case a trip to Vietnam is an ideal choice because Vietnam can satisfy the pickiest travelers, from young to old, from nature lovers to people looking for cultural diversity. But how is Vietnam in December? Where to go in December? This article will help you decide.

Table of Content[Hide]

1. Vietnam weather in December

December is considered one of the best months for traveling thanks to its stable climate, weather and steady temperature. While the central regions gradually receive less rainfall towards the end of the month, the North and South enjoy perfectly steady climatic conditions.

1.1 Northern Vietnam in December

In December, the North of Vietnam becomes a bit chilly with an average temperature around 17°C. In addition, there will be seasonal winds arriving from the North-East, bringing the deeper cold that covers the entire area of the Red River Delta which results in the temperature of less than 10°C. The weather in Vietnam, at this time, is dry with little rain.

1.2 Mountainous North of Vietnam in December

Being in the fairly high mountains, the average temperatures, compared to the delta areas, are usually 5-10°C lower, depending on the altitude. On cooler days, in Fansipan - “the roof of Indochina” (Lao Cai province) or the Hoang Lien Son mountain range or Mau Son (Lang Son province), there is possibly ice to be seen and it can even snow.

1.3 Central Vietnam in December

In December, Central Vietnam falls during the rainy period of the year. However, the good news is that precipitation and rainfall duration are gradually reduced at the end of December. Luckily, we can take advantage of nicer weather if we leave in the last days of the year in central Vietnam.

The climatic feature in the southern area of Hai Van Pass is tropical savannah, so although Hoi An, Da Nang and Hue are located in the center of Vietnam, there is less rain than in Hue because it is situated north of Hai Van Pass.

The average temperature in this area is 25°C.

1.4 Southern Vietnam in December

December is the best time to go to the South of Vietnam. If you want the sun shining along with moderate heat to escape the cold days in your country, going to South Vietnam will be a gift. The climate is dry, with a temperature of about 30 degrees, ideal for all outdoor activities: boat trips, cycling, or simply lying on the beaches.

Tips: If you are traveling from the North to the South of Vietnam, try to dress in several layers in order to change easily because the temperature varies a lot.

2. Travel costs and flow of tourists to Vietnam in December

The end of the year is the busiest season for tourism, with a high volume of visitors daily until the end of the month. In December, we also have very important holidays such as Christmas and New Year's Eve, so in any hotel, night cruise and 4-5 star resort, there are additional charges for the peak season and the Gala dinners held on the evening of December 24th and December 31st. However, these good quality accommodation facilities will be full in the blink of an eye so don’t hesitate to book in advance if you can confirm your holidays early.

Aside from accommodation services, there is a growing need for transportation for both foreign and Vietnamese visitors. So book flights early as soon as you can to get the best prices.

3. Things to see in Vietnam in December

3.1. Places to visit in Vietnam in December

Sapa

Some people might be surprised to find this place on the list, but December is one of the most beautiful moments of Sapa. In Sapa in December, there are no fascinating green or golden rice terraces full of water, it will be foggy, but this makes Sapa more poetic and less touristy. Arriving in Sapa in December, you can see the white flowers of plums, the red flowers of peach trees in the hills of Oolong Tea towards O Quy Ho, the colorful markets of the ethnic groups... Sapa in December is not for everyone but for those who love natural, wild beauty.

The sweetness of the flowers’ color along with the tranquility of the houses amidst the limestone mountains create a majestic landscape.

Floating markets are a distinct cultural trait in South-Western Vietnam. In any village, there are markets with different sizes, among which are the most beautiful and animated are Phong Dien market or Cai Rang market in Can Tho, Long Xuyen market in Long Xuyen, Nga Nam market in Soc Trang. However, similar to many areas of Vietnam, the floating markets open very early so don't forget to set the alarm early on your Mekong Delta days.

Phu Quoc

Certainly, Phu Quoc tops the list of the best seas in Vietnam in December. Hello! In December, the weather is a bit chilly in the north, sometimes really cold, especially in the northern mountainous areas. For the Central of Vietnam, the temperature remains around 25 degree. For the Southern Vietnam, December is the best time for outdoor activities: boat trips, cycling or lying on the beaches. Besides some places mentioned in the article such as Sapa, Perfume Pagoda, Ha Giang, Dong Thap, Floating markets and some beaches like Phu Quoc or Mui Ne, it is highly recommended you visit Hanoi, Halong Bay, Ninh Binh, Da Nang, Hue, Hoi An, Da Lat and Ho Chi Minh City. These are the most popular places to visit in Vietnam. It is really easy to find Vegetarian food in Vietnam, especially in some big cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, etc., you can read our blogs about vegetarian restaurants in each region by clicking Travel Guide => Place to go => Eat & drink. If you have any more questions, you can directly contact via email: sm@izitour.com for instant assistance. Thank you!

Thank you so much for your question. Vietnamese people often enthusiastically celebrate Western New Year (also called New Year's Eve). Many cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang host countdown parties and fireworks displays. Many restaurants and bars offer special New Year's Eve dinners and parties. However, it's worth noting that the traditional Vietnamese New Year usually falls in late January or early February, which is an even bigger celebration than the previous one. So, please consider to plan your Vietnam trip to experience these two big festivals in the best way!

Thanks for your question. Below are some Dos and Don'ts for you to keep in mind: - Do dress modestly, especially when visiting temples or rural areas. - Do remove your shoes when entering someone's home or certain temple areas. - Do ask permission before taking photos of people, especially in rural areas. - Do learn basic phrases like ""xin chào"" (hello) and ""cảm ơn"" (thank you). - Don't touch someone's head, as it's considered sacred. - Don't point with your finger or feet; use your whole hand to indicate directions. - Don't show public displays of affection, as it's generally frowned upon. This is great info, but what about food? Are there any special dishes or food festivals in Vietnam during December?

Hello! December is an excellent time for food lovers in Vietnam. Winter specialties include hot pot, grilled corn, and roasted sweet potatoes. In Hanoi, don't miss "chả cá" (grilled fish with dill) or "phở" (noodle soup) to warm up. Central Vietnam offers hearty dishes like "mì Quảng" (Quang-style noodles) and "bánh xèo" (crispy pancakes). In the South, try fresh seafood in coastal areas. While there aren't specific food festivals in December, many cities host weekend night markets with diverse street food options; for example, you can go to the night market held on every weekend while visiting Hanoi. Should you require any further information, feel free to contact us!

Hi Katie, at the beginning of December, there are lot of rain in Da Nang and Hoi An. But then you can enjoy the mild weather. So it is recommended to travel there during the second half of the month.
