Swimming in the Dang Mo Waterfall

Community tourism in Bac Son

Meet the Tay Ethnic Group

With approximately 1.5 million people, the Tay are the second largest ethnic group after the Viet. Having arrived from China centuries ago, the Tay have settled in the fertile plains at the foot of the mountains where they grow rice, but also vegetables and livestock. The Tay live in hamlets, such as Quynh Son, and live in large wooden houses on stilts. The Tay's traditional dress is sober compared to other ethnic groups. Both men and women wear indigo-coloured cotton outfits and only a silk belt brings a touch of colour to the women. The Tay practice ancestor worship and their daily life is quite codified. You will discover the specific rites of the Tay by spending the night in their village.

Best season: To enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Bac Son, we advise you to go there during the rice season. From March to the beginning of October. The most beautiful colours are during the rice harvest. There are two rice harvests a year in the Bac Son valley: one at the end of May and the other at the end of September/early October. From mid-October to March the rice fields are fallow and the spectacle is much less grandiose.
